Certified Medical Assistant/Recovery Support Worker (Full-Time Days) - Mobile Community Health Team

Who You Are:

Catholic Medical Center is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant to assist providers in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas. You will be able to assist with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes and performs general administrative duties all in accordance with The Joint Commission, CLIA, NCQA and government standards, as well as company policies and procedures. You succeed in meeting and engaging with homeless patients who are referred to HCH program from other sources of care such as: local hospitals, ER, health care providers, and community agencies, as well as with those persons met during Street Outreach and Health Education efforts.

What You'll Do:

  • Reviews charts prior to patients' scheduled appointment to assure that all requested lab work and diagnostic procedures have been completed and that reports have been returned and are accessible to the provider.
  • Obtains and records patient vital signs, height, weight and reason for visit. Reviews risk assessment questions as appropriate. Updates preventative care flow sheet, allergies and medications. Verifies patient pharmacy, preferred lab and advance directives.
  • Directs patients to examination rooms; assists in preparing patients for examination; assists patients in undressing, dressing and getting on and off of the examination table. Notifies provider of patient's arrival and readiness for their examination.
  • Assists provider with patient examinations and procedures, including (but not limited to) surgical procedures, GYN exams, diagnostic studies and treatments. Operates and monitors functioning of equipment; hands instruments to the provider; assists with suctioning and holds patients; comforts patients.
  • Monitors patient during and following procedures; looks for reactions and other visible complications; reacts to emergency situations; notifies the appropriate person in the event of a medical emergency.
  • Conducts hearing, vision, breathing and EKG testing; records results in chart using calculations to determine medication dosage.
  • Administers medications orally, rectally, topically and by injection under the direction of the provider. Administers vaccines according to the immunization schedule and under the direction of the provider.
  • Performs all Point of Care Testing in accordance with the CMC laboratory guidelines. Handles all specimens using Universal Precautions.
  • Completes laboratory forms. Processes laboratory samples and ships to reference labs.
  • Calls in prescriptions with provider approval.
  • Schedules and carries out appointments for patients requiring blood pressure checks, throat cultures, individualized teaching, etc. as prescribed by the provider.
  • Screens provider calls and utilizes assessment skills to evaluate patient's chief complaint; determines urgency of the problem; consults with provider regarding treatment and advises patient accordingly.
  • Cleans, wraps and sterilizes instruments after procedures as appropriate to the specific procedure. Takes wrapped instruments to sterile processing, as appropriate within the practice.
  • Meets and engages with persons who are homeless and in need HCH care, with a focus on patients who have experienced, or are active in their substance use and/or mental health disorders.
  • Assists patients to maintain linkages with care providers and partner agencies, promoting adherence to plans of care for achievement of recovery goals.
  • Supports patients in their efforts to sustain recovery, by assisting them with adherence to harm reduction and relapse prevention strategies, mental health care regimens, and medication therapies; assists them with access to SUD and MH care and treatment programs.
  • Coordinate patient referrals to SUD care providers, programs, and treatment facilities in the community, as indicated.
  • Documents all patient interactions and interventions in EMR, in accordance with QI Plan objectives, HCH program expectations for ICD-code claims submissions and UDS encounter utilization data tracking, and in accordance with CMC policies and procedures.


What You'll Bring:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program.
  • CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) or RMA (Registered Medical Assistant)
  • Recovery Support Worker Certification preferred
  • Two to three years' experience in health care setting performing similar work activities including, but not limited to clerical, billing or insurance processing.
  • Experience with and/or Understanding of Mental illness and Substance Use Disorder
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) - required within 6 months from hire.
  • CRSW (Certified Recovery Support Worker) - required within 2 years from hire.
