Plant Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY: To ensure Facilities and Maintenance staff provide a facility and environment that meets the needs of the clinical/nursing staff and patient population that receive treatment within the hospital.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Act as a direct and significant contributor to capital improvement projects related to building systems and utilities. This includes operating as the technical lead for all-sized projects and as a project manager for small-sized projects. Provide strategic forethought in planning/implementing activities to the Facilities Manager, Facilities Director and Facilities Project Manager when acting in support of capital improvement projects.

2. Acts and operates as the technical lead for central plant utility systems including central chiller, boiler, hot water and HVAC systems (among others).

3. Acts as a lead trainer for staff including and not limited to the energy management and building automation systems, utility systems and standard procedures. Assists in providing continuing education for staff on mechanical and control systems. Demonstrates the proper use of equipment, tools and materials and assists in the development of personnel.

4. Provides guidance on work being performed including best practices and troubleshooting.

5. Works with other departments to understand their operational needs and makes efforts to minimize disruptions to their services.

6. Assigns work orders, when requested, to team personnel based on priority, trade and personnel availability.

7. Troubleshoot, repairs and monitor preventive maintenance activities on all building systems and utilities.

8. Assists, and at times leads, major repairs of building maintenance and utility systems.

9. Secures external vendor proposals for necessary repairs and preventative maintenance activities under the direction of Facilities management.

10. Researches parts for repairs and secures proposals when necessary.

11. Acts as one of the department's liaison with external vendors and contractors when they are performing repairs within the facilities.

12. Audits corrective and preventative maintenance work order content and ensures work performed meets the needs and expectations of the hospital.

13. Maintains compliance with authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and accreditation entities including and not limited to documentation (electronic and hard copy), work order completions, preventative maintenance, etc.

14. Coordinates and/or performs daily tours of all operating mechanical equipment within the facility (daily rounds).

15. Intermittently supports other Facilities team members with minor building repairs (carpentry, plumbing, nurse call, general maintenance, etc.)

16. Intermittently support 'off-shift' personnel with plant operations questions and/or problems.

17. Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

• Associates degree in engineering/engineering technology and 10+ years' experience as a hospital plant operator.

• 3+ years' experience in energy management or building automation controls.
